Legacy apps will almost always look better with bg color "#bbbbbb" because they just inherit colors, not pixmaps from the theme . As a result there is no gradient and #979797 doesn't blend smoothly with the window decorator. Gtk apps though, look better with #979797 for the reason i explained before. If i could skin differently legacy apps from gtk apps this problem would obviously go away. - Apr 08 2008

GTK2 Themes by SkiesOfAzel 101 comments

That's an unsolvable problem that i am aware of but there is little i can do about :
Since there is a full window gradient, a single bg color will always look out of place in certain cases. With that said, it makes sence to use either the uppest (bbbbba) or the lowest (979797) color of the gradient to make blending (where it happens) smooth. The reason i chose to use the lowest part of the gradient as a bg color is that the upper part of windows is usually covered with menubars toolbars etc, that are already skinned by the gradient or is skinned anyway as part of the GtkWindow . The rest of the window though, doesn't have a fixed structure so it makes more sence to have the lower part of the gradient as bg color. - Apr 07 2008

1) I haven't set an image as a background it's the standard panel pixmap of the theme. As for transparency , i use compiz-fusion : Open Compizconfig , goto general settings -> Opacity Settings , click add and enter class=panel and a value of 79.

2) I've used gconf-editor to change the icon of the main menu applet to that of Galeon from the Oxygen refit icon theme. Get and install the Oxygen refit theme, open gconf-editor and goto apps->panel->objects . Look for an object with Main Menu as the tooltip , select use custom icon and enter the path of the icon in the custom_icon field . - Apr 04 2008

Thanks man, you are too kind . I don't consider myself an artist, i am just a dabbler , as my knowledge of image processing is rather limited. Besides, there are still problems with the theme :
I know for example that xul doesn't like my theme .Just mouse over the toolbars on firefox and thunderbird and you will see some redraw issues . Also ff3 doesn't inherit the list header label color, resulting in black text on a black widget...
The theme is also slow and the lighting is off in some cases.

That's the beauty of gpl though, anyone can take what for me is the best i can do and farther improve it according to his skills.
Thanks again for your words , it's very nice , not to mention motivating to see support from your colleagues .It's what makes the open source community something of which you want to be a part .

Actually i'd made an emerald theme before i created the metacity equivalent. The reason i didn't publish it was that i couldn't make the sides of the decoration follow the gradient of the window (the engine either stretches or cuts and tiles the pixmap).

As for minding, of course i don't mind. No one needs to ask or give credit to mod it, port it etc. It's gpl by choise ;). - Apr 01 2008

Thank you for your kind words, but no pixmap skin would be good enough to be the default for a distro, there simply are too many problems with the pixmap engine and gtk.

You can make the menu as compact as you like by changing the icons size in the last line of the gtkrc .

I would also like to see it evolve but the chances for this are small. In May, my obligatory military service starts and it lasts for one year :/ . I wouldn't worry too much though, it's gpl, so anyone can port it , mod it evolve it etc. - Mar 29 2008

Please read the license of the original theme before you apply a gpl on it ... I don't care about the credit and i would have released it under gpl if it where my own creation but it isn't, i just ported it. So please, change the license. - Mar 18 2008

- I will change the tooltip color on the next release but i don't think yellow would fit well with the rest of the theme.

- System button ? Which button is that?

- I might add a little more height to the buttons but i won't reduce their roundness . It's not that i don't want to, i could change allot of things but since the theme is a port, i try to be as faithful to the original as i can.

- I don't think it's possible to use the color tabs with pixbuf themes but i will look in to it.

- Next release will probably have those buttons skined.

It's a port and i wanted to be as faithful as possible to the original in respect to its author. Besides , i like the way the tabs are though i can't say the same for the buttons. This has more to do with the way some apps are written and the pixbuf engine itself and less with the buttons and i don't want to make even more per application fixes.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions , i will keep them in mind for when i make something from scratch. - Nov 23 2007

I have to tell you, i hate the aqua look... The original imetal theme came out for osx, (it was in effect something to help make Osx look like something else). The same goes for Samui,Truth and other themes that first appeared for the mac and you now can find them on gnome-look. There are also windowblinds and windows xp styles ports here , but no one complains :P .
Anyway, don't get me wrong i understand the fact that you want to see more originality, but inspiration doesn't reach us on demand either. - Aug 30 2007

Thank you. I intend to make it even better. In fact, i just solved some very annoying problems with pixmap themes in general , like Create Launcher dialog inheriting the panel background and Epiphany having one addressbar inside another one.
I've also modified the look of Epiphany and Thunar (again). Read the changelog for more info. - Aug 30 2007

Sorry for the late response , i was away for a few days. Go to the ff main menu , goto tools -> Addons , and drag the ff skin to the addons window. If you want to have a menuless ff, drag the imetal-gradient variant and the personal menu extension. Press the use theme button under the imetal-gradient entry on the themes tab and restart firefox. Open the Addons dialog again , goto extensions and press preferences under personal menu. Navigate to the miscellaneous tab and press settings. Check the Hide Menubar Option and also select on the right side which menu entries do you want to have on the toolbar context menu.
If you don't want to hide the ff menu, just skip all the steps about the personal menu extension and install the imetal-gradient-menu skin instead. - Aug 13 2007

Deviant Art renames the files for a reason i can't comprehend . Change the file's suffix to tar.gz and extract it somewhere. Open the folder and read the readme for instructions on how to set everything up. The skin on the pics is the gradient variant. - Aug 06 2007

imetal

GTK2 Themes by SkiesOfAzel 101 comments

Yes, the default menu is just for show. I couldn't compile anything more complicated than that.
The text alignment probably has to do with the font. I use Sans , size 10, resolution 90, and slight hinting.
As for the transparent panel in compiz fusion go to general options, opacity settings, window opacities and add gnome-panel with a value of 70. You can set opacities for individual apps in beryl too, but i don't remember the exact settings to tweak right now. - Aug 06 2007
