Debreate - Debian Package Builder

Developers Apps by Deluge 38 comments

I vote + for the idea, because making a Debian package is a real pain. So this GUI tool is a great start.

But it is too far from the finish. I think a package maker should cover all stages of creating the package. Hopefully this tool will reach its maturity, when it will be sufficient itself to do all the work.

Thanks for the great idea and looking forward to see further development. - Apr 24 2009
Neutrino 5.3

Beryl/Emerald Themes by VictorR 6 comments

Area under window title-bar and borders can be blurred with Compiz BLUR plug-in. Unfortunately, my video-card does not support this feature :(

Thank you, EDWARD0S.

While testing I noticed that I cannot download Neutrino 5.1 and 5.2 as my browser (Firefox) always opened them as plain text on the screen. The simplest solution is just to save the page as a file:

menu File -> Save Page As... -> the name of the file (must be pre-entered) -> Save - Feb 19 2009

World Clock Screenlet

Conky by jsf 13 comments

Sorry, it is 0.1.2. WorldClock either shows my local time, regardless of the TimeZone settings (its reading doesn't change, when I play with time zones), or the time, which I think ignores daylight saving.

One instance has Face Text as follows
Austin%n%n%n%n%A, %b %e%n%T %Z
Actual reading is
Austin... Sunday, Dec 28 08:19:12 NZDT
which is my local time and would be perfectly correct, if it were not set to America/Chicago. - Dec 27 2008
World Clock Screenlet

Conky by jsf 13 comments

Difficult to say, as I don't understand, what the Clock screenlet is showing. The only instance I use displays the correct time, having
Time Zone -- Pacific/Auckland
Time-Offset -- 0.0

When I launched the second instance it displayed what I guess was GMT. If I changed Time-offset to +3 it displayed the correct time for Moscow, so did it if I set Time-offset=0 and Time Zone - Europe/Moscow (I had to type it as there was no list).
Looks like the Clock screenlet works fine. - Dec 27 2008
World Clock Screenlet

Screenlet Manager v 0.1.12, WorldClockScreenlet v 0.9.1., python-dateutil is installed and has version number 1.4-1ubuntu2. Launching three instances at once is not a feature of this screenlet, as some others also appear in many instances. In order to get the proper time I set the time zone as Etc/GMT+2 instead of Europe/Moscow (which is GMT+3). And it does not change its shown time, when I change time zones. - Dec 25 2008
SlideShow Screenlet

I have not found the abovementioned core package, so I downloaded "the enhancements" by Lion-Simba, as I wanted the pictures were always centered.
In the source code both left and right borders are assigned to the same variable self.b_left (line 121). Anyway I like very much both the original idea and the enhancements.
In the Mirror theme I would suggest to use a panel instead of a frame, in that case there is no holes between picture and the frame. - Dec 10 2008
World Clock Screenlet

Conky by jsf 13 comments

It worked well for me, but after upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid (I guess), it launches three instances of the clock on "launch screenlet" and none of them shows the correct time. All three have different themes (?), but show the same local time; changing timezones has no effect at all.
How could I fix this? - Nov 16 2008
The Unofficial Widget Factory

Developers Apps by truefusion 3 comments

Very nice work! May I suggest a couple of things to make it even better?

1. I failed to install it until I installed libglade2-dev package. Maybe it worth to mention all dependencies.

2. Would be nice to have some lines in Combobox and ComboboxEntry to see how they look after dropped down.

Anyway this is a great improvement of the original TheWidgetFactory, thanks. - Jun 27 2008

GTK2 Themes by TheRob 218 comments

It looks very promising. It is very consistent and does not resemble any existing systems.

A couple of things I would suggest:
1.the buttons and edit boxes look trapezium-shaped, I think one-pixel-wide solid border would fix this.
2. check buttons don't have the distinguish feature, when checked in (one might think they were disabled).
3. (sorry, three things) some elements are just 90-degree rotated versions of others, so lighting direction should be adjusted for them.

Anyway this theme is the best of what i have seen recently. - May 06 2008
Gnome Debian Package Finder

I don't feel offended, I always glad to hear constructive responses.

1. I did not know about this Synaptic feature. Nevertheless I still think, that stuff in the Administration menu is not for everyday use.

2. and 3. are more about personal preferences.
4. I did not find info about iirc, I thought Synaptic is the default manager (?)

My program has already had the same search as dpkg -S does. But seems dpkg performs much faster; it worth trying to improve its performance. Your suggestions also helped me to find one wrong calculation, which must be fixed, thanks.
I will think about your other ideas, so far I implemented what I found useful myself, so any suggestions are welcome. - Feb 27 2008
Gnome Debian Package Finder

You are right, Synaptic does it and even more. But Synaptic is an administration tool to CHANGE the system, while this program is to PROVIDE INFORMATION about the system. Using administration tools is not advised, when you can avoid this.

The size of the package is what I cannot change easily, unfortunately. I will think, how it can be reduced.

dpkg -S is a command line command. In order to use GUI program you should only know, that is exists somewhere in the menu. For CLI command you should also remember its syntax. If one does not speak English, this is a hard task to learn meaningless sets of strange symbols.

Aptitude is not a graphical program.

In general, people make programs and other stuff to add diversity to our world. Could you explain, why there are so many software audio players, and among them so many WinAmp clones, and each has so many skins? - Feb 27 2008

One note about lower panel. As buttons are a little bit higher than usually, this may need increasing the lower Gnome panel to 28 pixels. - Oct 04 2007

Yes, I did. Thank you. Trying to make something consistent and neutral. Another idea is to decorate everything like an alien spaceship, but lack of artistic skills may prevent this. - Oct 04 2007

Sorry for this, sometimes the browser is going to display theme files like text instead of downloading them. I will add them packed into the archive file to prevent this strange behaviour. - Sep 17 2007
Remox (Emerald theme)

I wouldn't say that this theme is Vista-like. It has a fresh look; I found it matches well with Mist icons and blue selection colour. Well done! - Sep 17 2007

I am away for a couple of weeks, but when back I will continue modification my uHuman-soft Metacity theme to make it looking more like this one.
There is nothing common between Metacity and Emerald themes, and Metacity is much harder to make, but it is a good idea to use matching theme when one has to switch Compiz-Fusion off. - Sep 04 2007

I like this theme very match. Fresh idea, simple and aesthetic implementation. It looks great on blue background so I would suggest to add some blue tint to the window border, to make it more consistent. - Sep 03 2007

The default colour for uhc-soft GTK theme is green. To change it to match Copper Mine theme go to
System -> Preferences -> Theme
select uhc-soft, if necessary
click Customize, then Colors.

Window Background color is #F7F4F1
Input Boxes is white (#FFFFFF) and
Selected Item is #F8CCA5
Text is black everywhere. - Sep 03 2007

Cairo Clock by miss-dragon 1 comment

Maybe it is a little bit difficult to read the actual time, but anyway I like it.

Another cool think (not related to the clock theme) is that I was thrown away and asked to login again, right after I had finished typing the comment. Surely the whole comment was lost. - Aug 16 2007

Crystal Gold

Cursors by ZEphYR_double 10 comments

I like these cursors, but I have noticed that sometimes they change to default ones. Particularly Firefox replaces them. Exploring the folder I found that some files are links, and they are broken.

Is there any way to fix this? - Jul 27 2007

Metacity Themes by ECHM 60 comments

I don't like it personally (like say I would prefer one flowers to others), but the idea and its implementation is excellent! I have been trying to find the best matched GTK engine and icon set for this - my choice was Clearlooks (GTK theme) and Snowish. It needs more work to make the complete set (GTK theme/icons/ default colours and fonts) and then I think it must be included in distros.

Great work! - Jul 09 2007
