Definitely a path problem. When I do this, I get a dialog to choose the output path. Which one do you choose, or don't you get the dialog? Which KDE version do you have? Try to edit .kde/share/config/kwerc encdir=/home/user1 decdir=/home/user1 Right now I am pretty clueless about "startDir". Looks like kdialog is being started in a dir which it doesn't like. - Jan 29 2006

There are so many image convert menus, I don't know which one you mean. As AAC, FLAC and MP3 are abbreviations, uppercase makes sense. Kim also uses uppercase for TIF, GIF etc.

So you send me a translation list for ID3V1, V2 and ogg metadata and I will add this genre translation. - Jun 26 2005

I will think about presenting menu entries without source data type. By changing to this method it is easy to break stuff.
Following meta data are kept: artist, title, album, year, comment, tracknumber. Genre would mean too much effort for too little importance. - Jun 19 2005

You can make jhead optional like this:

test -z "$(which jhead)" && mogrify -rotate $ANGLE $FILE || jhead -cmd "convert -rotate $ANGLE &i &o" $FILE

This way, you still use ImageMagick and the EXIF header will be preserved. - Nov 23 2004

At least converting to JPEG silently fails in a directory with a space in its name.

In kwavencoder I use this kind of loop to avoid this:

until [ -z "$1" ]
do
command $1
shift

On my system, OGGs should also be application/ogg, but if you view properties of the file it is audio/vorbis. That is what I also use for kwavencoder. It does not work with application/ogg on my system (debian sarge).
I added audio/vorbis to the desktop files and it works fine. Shouldn't do any harm on other systems. - Oct 28 2004

Hello, I really like kim (but I looked for it in service menus, since nobody uses the scripts behind them...).

I find the resize pixel values like 300x225 misleading. Not every picture is 4:3 and landscape, so one might wonder what kim does to other pictures.
I suggest "resize to max. 300 pixels".

With your resize, compress, etc. of JPEGs, EXIF data gets lost! I use lines like this in my own menu:
Exec=jhead -cmd "mogrify -quality 90 -geometry 800x800 &i" %F
Maybe you want to think about integrating jhead for JPEGs. You can get the file extension in bash with: ${filename: -4}.

Also you might want to display an error message if a needed tool (like jhead) is missing.

In my own menu I also have brighten up picture with a gamma of 1.2:
Exec=jhead -cmd "mogrify -quality 90 -gamma 1.2 &i" %F
and remove EXIF thumbnail (useful for small files, saves 6kB)
Exec=jhead -dt %F
and grayscale JPEG:
Exec=jhead -cmd "jpegtran -copy all -grayscale &i > &o" %F
and halfscale image.

All in all your solution is way better than mine, but there is still room for improvement :-) - Oct 26 2004

The problem is that I don't want to bloat the servicemenu too much. I think the userbase for monkey, mpc, etc. files is too small to annoy a regular user with too many options.

I can think of extra projects like kwavencoder.mpc and kwavencoder.ape, but then only conversion from and to WAV, like with FLAC. - Oct 23 2004

Hello,
after hassling to get it compiled I took a look at your application. Maybe I am a bit old fashioned, but I don't think that only cloning Origin is worth while doing it. Everytime I have to work with Origin I get angry about how stupid this program is, how many errors it introduces and how many clicks I have to do.
The only thing you may improve is point number 2. But the user concept is confusing and not straight forward. The dialogs have to be better designed and the whole structure of editing and changing options could be done much better.
What I am dreaming of is something like gnuplot with integration of data sets and plots into the interface, including live data manipulation like Excel and functions and better visual effects like Origin.
E.g. I hate the concept to have to create a column for evaluating a function of several other columns. In Origin6.1 this column isn't even auto-generated. Just an idea is to have a gnuplot style command line attached to every data set where you can create plots _and_ automatically new columns with the calculations of the plot command. So you could decide if you use the time consuming dialog thing or just write down your ideas quickly. In both ways the options would be stored in an extra editable tab. Something like that...

With gnuplot you can work really fast, use easily scripts, but you cannot analyze and manipulate data and the interface is cluttered to console, plots and data set editors.
But I don't think that all the cluttered option dialogs of Origin is a good solution. This has to be cleaned up, IMHO.
Nevertheless good luck with your project! Many others seem to like the idea. My opinion is just that there could be "a better Origin". But you won't reach this by cloning 1:1. You have the chance to create something new and better. - Oct 21 2004
