Wallpapers Debian by alexitaly 8 comments

Well, each to his own. Debian is a cool distro, and is Ubuntu which is Debian-based, but for me, and many other Slack users, it "just works", which is good enough for me. I tried about 50 distros when I started, Slackware was the first, and it is the one I love the most. - Mar 16 2007

Doesn't that sort of imply that Debian is the worst there is, that is the impression I get. - Mar 16 2007

Oops, thanks for that, I never noticed. I have to change it before I upload it because I think most people have their bootsplash stored in /etc/bootsplash. - Mar 12 2007

Also I forgot to say the line UseTheme should be set to true:
UseTheme=true

If you cant be bothered looking through the file to see if these lines exist do

cat /path/to/kdmrc | grep Theme

At least you will know if they are there then. - Mar 09 2007

You can also edit the kdmrc file to use it. I don't know where it will be on your system, on mine it's in
/opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

a locate will reveal the location of this file. Inside it there should be a line reading 'Theme=/path/to/theme', it may be commented out, if it is uncomment it and change the path to either the folder containing the theme, or the .xml file. If it isn't there just add it. - Mar 09 2007

This theme is 1280x1024. Or at least I think it is, I'm pretty sure that's the resolution of my KDM screem. The background, lines.png, is 1280x1024. - Mar 09 2007

KDM3 Themes by johngreenwood 25 comments

Well, I would do those things but I have a few problems. The first one being that my monitor won't handle that resolution so making the kdm theme would be not possible for me as I cant test it. It is very easy to do yourself though, just get an image or scale the background of this to the required size and then play with the numbers in the xml file till everything is where it is supposed to be. Also, I did not make the splash screen, lfzy did, so you might want to ask him about that. As for the Grub screen, I don't know Grub, I only use Lilo. A Lilo screen wouldn't be too difficult, but maybe someone reading this may volunteer to make those things.

Sorry,

I don't know to be honest, there may be a way to do it, but I don't know it. Saying that though, I just tried adding a new username label underneath an existing one with a bit of an offset and it gave a shadowy effect. Or maybe you could leave the username label out of the xml file and just make it in GIMP or something. I don't really know what I am doing, I just have a theme and play with it till it looks like I want it to. - Mar 07 2007

More drops (bootsplash 1024x768)

Bootsplash Various by johngreenwood 10 comments

OK, I do not know how to install this in Kubuntu, but you should be able to install it the same way I did. You must get a kernel patch from bootsplash.org and recompile your kernel with the patch. You also need the 'user space' utilities, the important one being 'splash', make splash and copy it to /sbin. Then you must open the config file and change the paths to point to the correct location, and from a terminal type

sudo /sbin/splash -sf /path/to/configfile.cfg > /path/to/where-you-want-the.initrd

When you have the initrd, you need to tell LiLo/Grub where it is. I don't know Grub, but for lilo it is done with a line like this

initrd=/path/to/initrd

then you must run /sbin/lilo, or reinstall Grub.

You should probably have a good read at bootsplash.org first, then you will have a better idea. Make sure you understand what you are doing before doing it. - Mar 03 2007

A splash screen? I can't make them, they never seem to work for me for some reason. The closest I have ever got to a working splash screen was the default KDE one with the background changed, and I had to delete a file for it to work. - Mar 03 2007

The "SERVERS" set is the one I noticed too, although the ones I had had the name "system" they are the same icons. I have removed those icons and sent an email to fasticon and am awaiting a response from them about it. Thanks for letting me know though. - Feb 28 2007

Which ones? Please let me know, I have managed to find the "system" icons in the download section but was unable to find the license so I downloaded them and the license says they are free for personal use. I will remove those icons, if you see them elsewhere with a non-gpl license please let me know. - Feb 28 2007

I would love to make a full theme, but I wouldn't know where to start. My graphical skills are non-existent and it would probably take me forever to create one. So if anyone else wants to make one, go right ahead, I would like to see it.

I'd actually get rid of the logo altogether. I don't know about other people, but I never use a wallpaper with a logo on it, unless the logo is KDE, or Slackware or something else related to what I have on my computer. It is a nice photograph though. - Feb 27 2007

I really don't see what the problem is, I mean, if this guy just browses the internet looking for nice wallpapers and uploads them here, thats good isn't it? He probably visits hundreds of web pages looking for them on many different sites, and you only have to come here. Also, if he makes a bit of cash from google ads, good for him, that's why they are there. Personally, I think this is a very nice picture, and I'm voting good. - Feb 16 2007

Its done. I have added a 256x256 kde logo too. To add your own icons, place icon in the images folder and edit the Desklogo.py file with the name of the new file something like this:

"nameofyourlogo.png",

don't forget to separate the items with a comma though, it makes the menu look ugly.

Thank you for your interest.

If this message is regarding ht emetabar (I can't check, for some reason when I try to view older comments, I get the same page), Then this is how to do it, in konqueror change the sidebar view to metabar, it shows information about the selected file, with that view, right click on a blank space and select configure metabar. You may need to make one. I can send you mine and you change the pic if you like. - Jan 02 2007
