sftp and ftps are quite different protocols (read here: http://www.enterprisedt.com/products/edtftpjssl/faq-answers.html). there is a very handy fish:// kio-slave which delivers filesystem abstractions for remote servers on which you have shell access. ftps is an extension to the ftp protocol, like https. - Feb 18 2008

oops. fixed it, thanks for notice. - Feb 02 2005
i don't know of anyone. if there will arrive interesting patches i'd still try to include them properly. i will stop adding major features myself, although. stuff which seems handy to me and which is reasonable to be in an ftp client might still find it's way into kasablanca if i'm in the mood, also fixing of serious bugfixes and compatibility issues with new versions of kde. - Jan 31 2005
regarding the encryption levels: you can enter a FEAT command in the commandline and the server should report if it supports AUTH TLS. wether your traffic is currently encrypted or not is indicated by the little lock icon in the statusbar. it's updated every second, so there's a chance it doesn't reflect the status of directory encryption correctly (in case the dir retrieving process is finished in less than a second). - Aug 18 2004
uhm, no idea where you got that tar file from, but i don't know of a binary called kasablancaftp-0.4

anyway, to compile the sources.

1) grab the tar.gz file above.
2) open console and change to the directory where the tar.gz has been saved.
3) type "tar xzf kasablanca-0.4.tar.gz"
4) type "cd kasablanca-0.4"
5) type "./configure" (you may have to add "--prefix=PATHTOYOURKDEINSTALLATION")
6) type "make"
7) change to root typing "su"
8) type "make install"

to compile you need gcc/g++, the kdelib headers and the openssl-headers installed. if you miss something it will tell you during the "./configure" step. - Jul 19 2004
i partially agree. i think the issue of compatibility with older installations isn't receiving the attention it actually deserves in current linux development. applications which require bleeding edge installations exclude many potential users, who are not willing to make substantial changes to their stable installation. i myself run kasablanca 0.3.1 on my laptop, since there is suse 9.0 installed, on which an update to kde 3.2 is quite a hazzle. however there is certain technology which makes development far easier, like the kconfigXT framework, which sadly is only available on kde 3.2 installations. due to a lack of time, writing an appropiate configuration implementation was not an option, so the decision to be made was between either ditching kde 3.1 compatibility or not adding much requested features. considering that kde 3.2 has been out for quite some time, and pretty much every major distro have it as their default installed, i choosed dropping kde 3.1 compatibility, knowing that this will exclude people from using kasablanca, and i certainly wasn't happy about that. - Jun 13 2004
hi, it's in cvs now, thanks for pointing out. - Jun 13 2004
it's done. i ussually change the .ui files version, but it seems i've forgotten two files this time. thanks for pointing out. - Jun 12 2004
that's some rant, i'll try to give some answers :)

a) agreed, there's no readme file. it has not been a priority yet to write one. by reading the source-headers, or googling for kasablanca the email address can be found out easily, tho.

b) when you click the kde '?' symbol and select the encryption element, you'll get an explenation what level 1,2,3 means. which leads to...

d) kasablanca does *not* feature sftp (basically ftp over ssh) support so far, instead the ftps protocol is implemented (this is mentioned everywhere, afaik). to be more precise it's the AUTH TLS method, which is used. it's not widely supported yet by (unix) clients, but it is establishing (compared to sftp there are major advantages like data-encryption). sftp support is on the todo list, tho.

c) the colors will be configurable in the next release, i promise. it's a small effort to implement that. - Apr 26 2004
whoops, sorry. i pressed refresh by incident. - Apr 16 2004
well, it's not so easy. the environment kasablanca is developed on a suse 9.0 machine, where automake 1.7 is installed by default. in case you want to update to automake 1.7, maybe you can deliver a mandrake rpm, done with checkinstall. while the rpms created with checkinstall aren't always perfect, it's still the most easy way to get you an rpm. just './configure --prefix=' then 'make' and instead of 'make install' just do 'checkinstall' (as root).

that's because my suse build system is 'infected' with nvidia drivers. afaik you can easily do a 'rpm -U bla.rpm --nodeps' here. wether the rpm works or not most likely depends on where mandrake installs kde. on suse 9.0 its /opt/kde3. - Apr 16 2004

i don't care for the violence, but there's racist/nazi symbols on that wallpaper (http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/groups_kkk.asp and http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/racist_celtic_cross.asp). that's not tolerable. admins please delete this. - Oct 08 2004

too bad you haven't gone public with your project before :( i've searched desperately for a decent client to contribute and enhance so it fits my needs. when i did not find anything appropiate (i second your opinion about using kio slaves), i decided to create my own client. these days kasablanca does everything i need, and i lack the time to implement user-requested features, so kasablanca will most likely stall anyway. i checked your client and it looks very good, thus joining efforts would make more sense than maintaining two advanced ftp clients for kde, imo. do you idle in an irc channel?
