It is a good idea, I really loved that feature too, from enlightenment.
But the decoration itself is not the place to handle it (it could), but this should take place in the global kwin configuration dialog, along with all the other settings already there.
I hope, they add something like that to kde 3.5 or 4.0.

Maybe I add an option to my configuration dialog, but it would become obsolete, as soon as kde offers this feature nativly. - Aug 16 2005

You need the qt-devel package to compile the deco from source. I don't know the name of Mandrakes package.
If you have the qt and qt-devel packages installed, and configure still can't find it, try to specify it to configure with the --with-qt-dir=[DIR] parameter.

I have provided a RPM for Mandriva/Fedora, it should work perfectly for you. Does it? - Aug 16 2005

RenderAccel caused big problems on my nvidia machine. Did you try with RenderAccel disabled?
This deco can cause problems too, it is far away from beeing stable. I don't give warranty and only little support, since most problems are because of strange GL driver behaviour. - Jul 30 2005

There already is. You only need to disable "allow moveing windows when maximized", in the "move" tab of the kwin settings dialog. Then you can't move and resize maximized windows, and the frame is totally left behind, when maximized. :) - Jul 28 2005

Yes, I changed the source URL from kde-look to my homepage, because it's size exceeded the 500kb barrier.

Thank you!
I am afraid, it is not possible for now to mix composite with OpenGL, so you will probably never see the windows through in Crystal-GL.

But it is possible to do this in Crystal (non-gl), but I had no success. Maybe somewhat later, but at the moment I'm a bit out of time. :( - Jun 16 2005

If you compile from source, make sure you pass your kde directory to ./configure. For Slackware, I think, it's:

./configure --prefix=/opt/kde

If you use a distribution, for which packages are available, please download and install this one.

If not, make sure you install it into the directory, where your distribution wants it to. For Mandrake you should do this with ./configure --prefix=/usr ! A following install will install it to /usr. Then you should be able to select it in your kde control center in the window decorations section. - May 18 2005

KDE 3.4 has a composite manager and so can easily handle full transparency. Technically it is NOT possible at the moment to use the COMPOSITE transparency along with CrystalGL (OpenGL), so this deco cannot handle the new features.

However in Crystal it would be possible, but it needs a lot of testing an fiddling on my side to implement this, because the features are quite new and not well documented. I know only one app at the moment, that behaves the way, I want Crystal to, and this is konsole (if compiled manually with enabled COMPOSITE support. It is disabled by default).

Perhaps I can make it, but it'll take time. - Mar 20 2005

What do you mean, "the gentoo ebuild is unparsable"? It works well for me, so the ebuild is alright, I think. What did you try to install it? Did you make a gentoo overlay?

And would you mind to post me all messages, that appear, when you start kwin manually from within a terminal? (kwin --replace).

And if you get a kwin traceback, post it to me, too.

This is because it gets the wallpaper again, when you switch it. If you have only one wallpaper set on every desktop (instead of using different ones), deactivate the "Track desktop changes" in the background tab. This speeds up the changing a lot. - Feb 21 2005

Already had, but it is "hidden". Simply use Fade as image effect and set the amount to 100%. Then no transparency is calculated and the deco should run a little faster.

My notebook has the same chipset and I have not experienced this behaviour for now. I am very sorry that I see myself helpless facing the freeze problems. I can't fix this on nvidia cards, too.
Thanks a lot for this bug report, but I cannot promise to find a fix.
I think it is most likely a drivers bug, and if, I cannot do anything. On the other hand, my deco seems to be the only software, that is causing problems.

Well, then grab some webspace, host your packages there and link them in one single submission. You can add 7 content links. Or find someone who can host this for you, but that kde-look limits it's contents to 500kb is totally okay. You don't need to upload one single package.
But to add so many contents to kde-look is just impatient. - Jan 30 2005

I've experienced similar effects on a nvidia machine, causing kwin/X to freeze, when creating a new window after X-Server switch.
Another thing is that the deco might use texture buffers, when you run a game. o_O I don't know where that comes from, nor how to stop it.

I know of the problems and try my best to fix them. Thank you for the hint.

That it freezes Quake and not UT may be just luck. On my notebook Quake 3 runs fine with my deco enabled, but I know this does depend on the graphics board and perhaps more... - Jan 22 2005

I've experienced this on a nvidia box too, but depending on the window size. A fullscreen wnd of 1280x1024 was damn slow, the 1024x768 window was fast.

Does it depend on the window size on your machine, or only the number of opened windows?

Unfortunately I had a lot of troubles getting lighting to work, because of my odd vector geometries.
So I decided to forget simulated lighting and use a fixed light-map instead. I render just some quads with a brightness and transparency value onto my deco, thus creating the illusion of lighting. :)
With this technique I am unable at the moment to create dynamics and animation. Perhaps I try again soon, but I won't promise anything. Anyway good idea, thank you for this suggestion.

And I already thought of different shaped borders, not only round, as current. Maybe there is an option coming for this, in future. - Jan 12 2005

My deco is not a game, it has no permanent animations. I render the deco only, when there is need to. Most of the time my deco is sleeping, when you don't move a window, etc. So there is absolutely no overhead and misuse of the gpu. - Jan 11 2005

Not enough sample code. Not that easy, especially when combined with OpenGL. I'll wait until KDE 3.4 is released, with composite enabled kwin. It will more likely be possible in Crystal (non-gl) rather than Crystal-GL.

The ebuild is working perfectly on my machine. You need to place it into a gentoo portage overlay and generate a digest, before you can emerge it.

I need to test this at home, with my own nvidia card.

Most likely the window deco is running fine, except that the opengl subsystem could not be initialized. If you run "kwin --replace" in a terminal, you might get error messages.
When the opengl could not be initialized, it simply draws nothing, leaving the part of the deco what it was before (try moving windows outside the borders of the screen).
Is this right? This is definitely a bug, because it did work before, but I need to find it. It works just fine on my system. :-/ Please wait until I can test this on another machine. - Dec 21 2004
